EV calculators that show their assumptions

Five working tools, free, no sign-up. Every default has a source and a date, every assumption is editable, and none of them quietly pad the savings to make electric look better than it is.

A note on how we count. Most "EV savings" tools compare fuel against electricity and stop there. That is the easy half. Over three to five years the bigger number is usually depreciation — what the car is worth when you sell it — which is why our ownership-cost tool puts it front and centre instead of leaving it out.

They all run entirely in your browser. Nothing is sent anywhere, and no email is required.

EV vs Hybrid Ownership Cost Calculator

Over your ownership period, will an EV or a hybrid actually cost you less? Answers it properly — depreciation, charging, fuel, insurance, road tax and financing, over 3 to 10 years. Thailand is live now, with the same engine ready for more markets.

  • Depreciation and resale scenarios, not just running costs
  • Home, mixed, public and condo charging modelled separately
  • Conservative / base / optimistic resale side by side
  • Every default carries a source link, date and confidence level
  • Shareable link so you can send a configured comparison

🔭 What we're building next

In rough priority order. No ship dates — we've learned that publishing them just leaves stale promises on the page. A tool goes live when its data is good enough to stand behind, not before.

🇺🇸Next
Ownership cost — United States

The same engine behind the EV vs hybrid tool, with a US data module: dollars, miles, MPG, state electricity rates and US resale evidence.

  • Answers "is an EV still worth it after the credit expired"
  • Lowest-effort build on this list — the engine already exists
  • Adds EV vs petrol alongside EV vs hybrid
Needs: state-level electricity and fuel data, and normalised US resale evidence.

Home vs Public Charging Calculator

What charging actually costs at home vs at a public station on your own numbers — and whether a home charger install pays for itself.

  • State electricity rates, editable to your own bill
  • Real public network pricing — Supercharger, EA, EVgo
  • Home charger install payback period, net of rebates

🔋Planned
Battery Health & Replacement Cost

Honest degradation estimates for used-EV buyers, with what a replacement would realistically cost and what the warranty still covers.

  • Aimed at the used market, which is where the growth is
  • Warranty coverage checked before any repair cost is shown
  • Probability-weighted, never a scare number
Needs: a real degradation dataset. We will not ship invented failure rates — that is the one thing this site does not do.

What we decided not to build

Being straight about the cuts, since some of these were previously listed here as coming.

A separate Total Cost of Ownership calculator

Folded into the EV vs hybrid tool instead. That engine already computes economic ownership cost — depreciation, energy, maintenance, tax, insurance and financing — over 3 to 10 years. A second TCO tool would duplicate the maths with its own set of assumptions, and the two would drift apart within a couple of updates. One engine, more country and powertrain modules, is the better shape.

A standalone EV loan calculator

Financing is already an advanced option inside the ownership-cost tool, where it belongs — interest and fees counted, principal not double-counted against depreciation. A generic auto-loan calculator adds nothing anyone can't get from their bank, and we'd rather not compete for a keyword we have no advantage in. Lease vs buy is a genuinely different question, and it will be a guide with a small embedded widget rather than a hub-level tool.

Carbon and solar calculators

Carbon-savings tools are everywhere and rarely change a purchase decision. Solar-plus-EV belongs on SolarNiverse, where the solar data already lives.

How we build these

🔍

Sourced defaults

Every pre-filled number carries a source link, a retrieval date and a confidence level. Where a figure is an analyst estimate rather than a published fact, it says so on screen.

✏️

Nothing hidden

Assumptions that move the answer — resale value, real-world efficiency, insurance — are visible and editable. If a result depends on a soft number, the tool tells you which one.

📉

No inflated savings

Expired programs show as expired. Lapsed promotional prices fall back to list. "Up to" is never presented as typical. Accuracy is the only real advantage this site has.

🔒

Runs in your browser

Calculations happen on your device. Nothing you type is sent to us or anyone else, and no tool asks for an email before showing a result.

📱

Works on a phone

Every tool is tested down to a 320-pixel screen, with keyboard navigation and reduced-motion support, not just a desktop layout squeezed narrower.

🌍

Local, not averaged

Prices, tariffs, taxes and depreciation are national. Where a tool covers more than one market, each gets its own data and its own page rather than a worldwide average.

Not sure which tool you need?

Deciding between two cars, start with ownership cost. Already decided and working out the running costs, start with savings or charging.
